Question regarding new floppy drive for A4000D

Want to buy a new floppy drive for my Amiga 4000, since I need a slim one to fit two 3,5" devices in there. I need it as DF0:, a DD is just fine.

I found drives on AmigaKit, Vesalia and Amigastore.eu. At the first two stores you have to select whether it will be DF0 or DF1. At Amigastore.eu (Sony drive) you don't. But I'd like to buy at amigastore.eu since they have some other stuff I want to combine in one order.

Can anyone explain what would have to be done to a floppydrive for making it a DF0 or DF1 or why not (amigastore).

Thanks!

Let's build a complete Mediator guide

Hey folks

I'm new to the world of Mediators and I've really noticed that information about Mediators is really fragmented. The official docs are not great, and most forum threads are pretty vague and inconclusive.

So, let's fix it. I've started a project on GitHub (https://github.com/Mediators/UnreliableGuide) to build a guide, and I've put in it almost everything I've learned so far about Mediators.

Since GitHub/git is a hard workflow for classic Amigas, I'm very happy to take fixes/additions/suggestions on this thread, or via my email.

The guide is written in Markdown, but I'm converting each revision to HTML and PDF. Unfortunately amiga.org's attachment rules are too strict for me to attach the files here, so instead here are links to the HTML and PDF versions directly on GitHub (which means you need SSL):

What turbo card it is?

Few years back, I bought an Amiga 1200 from some scene guy. It was in so bad condition, dirty, yellow and with some Prodigy stickers (?). Inside there was a memory extension. I was going to get a HDD for it back then. I played it for few times on it's floppy. Recently I opened again and checked its card. It turned out to be a 040 Turbo card! It gives me 22 Mips in sysinfo, more than A4000! :laugh1:
I noticed it heats a lot. Perhaps I should get some fan for it.

Is that like old blizzard? There is no any markings. If I will put a cooling fan on it, how should I connect it to the power?

Looking for PC to Amiga Floppy Drive Conversion Resources

I am looking for info on converting a PC HD 3.5 inch floppy drive to a Amiga DD floppy drive. I have only been able to find bits and pieces of info about it and only a couple drives. Does anyone know of a good resource for these modifications? I need to replace the drive in my Amiga 1000. The drive in it is not the original, but it is having issues. I am picking up a bunch of drives today for free and hopping one of them will work.

Reusing floppy disks?

Probably a noob question, but here goes..

I have a decent pile of disks with games, demos, etc. some work some don't.

- what's the best way to check if a game/disc that doesn't work is just corrupt and can be formatted to be reused of if it just get trashed?

- what's the best tool to format them?

I have an hxc emulator never used yet, a gotek on the way, and even a pcmcia transfer kit. With any of these I should be able to write image files to real disks. (Because sure, while we have the practicality of the emulation solutns for the drive, we all like to pop in a disk every ince in a while, right? :) ). One thing that throws me off is I heard Gotek does not support protected files, etc. and only supports adf files. if that's the case, does that mean I would not be able to oroperly recreate a physical disk with it? And what's the difference in doing it with the transfer kit if it also transfers adf images as well?

Thanks!

Getting a CD to work on an A500 via IDE

Okay, I'm pretty sure this has been talked about before, but couldn't find anything with a search here so...

Got my A500 with the Mega Midget Racer, kipper2 8MB RAM, and generic IDE interface all working real nice with OS 3.1.

Would like to upgrade the OS to 3.9 which comes on CD.

I've attached a CD-ROM to the secondary IDE connector and made sure it's set as a slave drive with my CF drive set as master.

Boot up, open System and DOSDRIVERS, double click on CDROM. Wait a couple of seconds and nothing appears to happen. Re-click on the CDROM and it tells me it's already mounted.

Go to shell and cd CDo:. Nada.

What have I forgotten? I"m pretty sure it's something silly, but can't figure out what!

I've tried editing and changing the drive number but that didn't do any good either.

Amiga 4000 - How to expand.

Eventually I want to buy some accelerator card, but right now I want to replace loud supply fan and 16 MB memory.
What type of memory it takes? Special Amiga format? How much is 128MB?
Is there a store that sells modern power supplies for A4000? I don't think I can make one myself.

Guru-ROM in a GVP sidecar?

Bought one of that new run of Guru-ROM's over on Amibay. The product itself works great, but I didn't think this through very well and it doesn't quite fit inside a GVP sidecar, LOL. Oh well, it's crammed in there for now and working perfectly, just curious if anyone else has ever installed one of these before, how'd you do it?

Off-hand I can think of a couple ways... use a ribbon cable to relocate the socket, or try to solder the PCB directly to the GVP board. Or I suppose I could dremel through the drive mounting plate and try to give it a little vertical clearance...

Not a big deal at all, just fishing for ideas how other folks might've done this in the past.

Violating a virgin!

An A600 that is :-)

So I have a replacement A600 that looks to have never been opened!

Looks to have no hard disk and version 2.something kickstart, so it'll be getting :

A604n
Indivision ECS
Subway USB
Card Flash IDE thingy
Vampire2 (Black) that I found laying around ;-)

If it all looks good after that I'll have the modulator removed, the HDMI/VGA run neatly out (somehow) and the USB ports also run neatly to the back.

Wireless PCMCIA network card for A1200?

$

I have a wired network card for the A1200's PCMCIA slot, along with AmigaKit's EasyNet. It works fine, but, I'd like to get a wireless card. Is there any particular model/brand that is known to work with the A1200 and has a driver for it?

Thanks,

Kirk

Unknown A500 2MB RAM upgrade

I've lying around a, suposedly, A500 2MB RAM upgrade. The PCB seems built by an unknown brand "BS" (it's the only mark in the PCB).
It has 16 1MBx1 M5M41000 ICs, a battery clock, on/off switch and the usual Gary adapter.
I've never been able to make it work. Recently I've been able to sucessfully plug it in my A500+ and partially worked as a 512MB chip upgrade (?).

Has anyone idea of what it could need to work as a full 2MB upgrade?

Membrane issue?

Just booted up my Amiga 1200 for the first time in a while, was really exited as it had been away for cap-fix but to my disappointment the keyboard is not working properly.
One or two keys are not responding at all, and from what I understand its probably the membrane that is the issue but for several keys the mapping is f***ed up. a is q and q is a, z is w and w is z, m is ; and so on.. Can this be due to the membrane also, or might it be something else that is causing this?

I have attached a photo (as close as I can get) of the membrane, but cant really judge if it is worn down or what. I read a forum post where some had cut the edge of, would this be recommended? I fail to see how this would be beneficial, is the connection not made on the flat end of the surface? If I cut it, the bottom would be exposed- but this is not where the connection is made is it?

A3000D 16MHz question

$

Is it possible to have a skilled technician change the 68030 CPU & Oscillator on a 16MHz A3000D to the 68030 25MHz CPU & Oscillator?

I am running into Z3 issues related to having the 16MHz model. Autosense Z2/Z3 add on boards either will not be selected to run in Z3 mode, or, the cards will not be detected at all, with my upgraded Super Buster 11 / 16MHz combo. I could just switch back to the prior super buster chip, but, then my 256M BigRam board will not work, according to the manufacturer.

games dont't run on A3000 normally

I have an Amiga 3000 with a gotek Floppy emulator. Specs are 68030/68882fpu/68030mmu
fast ram = 8 megschip ram = 2 megs

I tried many games... Nearly all stopp responding or fail - for example the Days of Thunder or Dawn Patrol ... Eye of Beholder I fails at the moment of changing levels...

Only ELF runs normally...

Is it a hardware failure or A3000 is not a gaming computer ?

Tried to disable CPU cache at startup menu...

Also in emulator when emulating A3000 the same happends to the Days Of Thunder... and when emulating A600 - it runs ok.
